Travancore Anchel
(A former princely Indian State)
USTC is short for the United State of Travancore and Cochin which was formed in 1949 from the two states of Cochin and Travancore in southern India.
In 1950 its name changed to State of Travancore-Cochin. It's now part of the state of Kerala.
When India gained independence in 1947, the new government started the long process of winding up the old States. The first step was to merge the old States into larger geographical unions. The two States in Southwest India were linguistically separate, and so were grouped together in 1949 as the USTC, and the next year as the State of Travancore-Cochin. These days it forms the State of Kerala, with some relatively minor adjustments of borders, to render the State more linguistically homogeneous.
The union was philatelically complicated because both States had their own stamps, but the larger Travancore had maintained a separate currency. At union, Travancore switched to Indian currency, which required the overprinting of its stamps in Indian currency equivalents:
this Travancore Anchel stamp issued on 1939 in commemoration of Travancore King's 27th birthday.
